A conversation with Walls (4/28/1902)
Congratulations on your fabulous debut recording with Menduvia Osmany Paredes. What is the meaning of the name of the band and how it formed? He
Menduvia term derives from the word witch, a term commonly used in the Caribbean and is a slang word to describe the flavor. Menduvia
was formed in January 1998, under my musical direction. Almost always play Latin jazz, however we also make a variety of genres such as swing, bossa nova, rumba, cha cha cha, etc. Influences

According to his biography, his father was the first musical influence. What other musical influences do you have?

My main influences include Herbie Hancock, Chucho Valdes, Dizzy Gillespie, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Emiliano Salvador, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson and others. I also believe I am touched by the Cuban Filin movement of experimental ideas and intimate staging (Filin word in English is a representation of "Feeling"). The Filin has been defined by some of its creators as a jazz movement inserted in Cuban popular music, or in other words, music made by performers who knew and could adapt the styles of Lester Young, Art Tatum and Coleman Hawkins, as well as great singers and composers of traditional Cuban music-(here I quote: "Cuba, where music is hot" by René López and David Carp). Emiliano Salvador

Speaking of musical influences, it seems the spirit of Emiliano Salvador is present in the recording studio when you perform your job. Just
I have dedicated the theme The Sound of Emiliano Emiliano Salvador. I consider this great Cuban pianist-gone-sadly made many contributions to Latin jazz and music in general. Indeed, I wish to pay my respects to Emiliano Salvador, because his music has been the biggest influence on my life and career, from when I was a kid. In my opinion, the spirit of Emiliano is present wherever Latin jazz is played, whether in Cuba, the rest of Latin America, the U.S. and Europe. Menduvia

What are the main members of the band? The principal members
of the band are Osmany Paredes on piano and musical direction, Barbaro Perez on bass, Hilario Bell on percussion and flute Reinaldo Perez.
All band members graduated from the National Arts School (ENA) in Havana.
Grand Fellove
How is the partnership it has established with great Fallove Francisco Valdés?
OP: A Fellove-cousin of Carlos "Patato" Valdes-international criticism considers it one of the greatest Cuban singers and composers of all time. In addition, he is credited as one of the founders of the movement filin. I've admired since my childhood Fellove so has been a great honor for me to work with him, learn from his vast experience and creativity. Fellove has lived in Mexico for thirty years.
is also important to note that Fellove, was the first Cuban singer of his generation to sing in "scat", ie, jamming with his voice. His style influenced basically Guapacho and singers like Bobby Carcasses, who followed in his footsteps. My band Menduvia accompanies the Great Fellove in all its presentations. Latin Jazz in Mexico

You mention that Mexico has great Latin jazz musicians. However, it might lack a distinctive character in that field. How Latin jazz received in Mexico? Is there a Latin jazz "scene" in Mexico?
Although it has been well accepted in Mexico, the movement lacks strength, and there are few bands playing Latin jazz. Indeed, many jazz bands play rock, jazz pop and swing. Fortunately, a variety of concerts and festivals where local bands have the opportunity to play, gain experience and showcase their musical style.
I've been fortunate enough to share the stage with many of the leading exponents of Latin jazz in Mexico, for example with the bassist Roberto Aymes, with Cuban flautist Ricardo Benitez, with guitarist Christopher Lee, saxophonist Jaco Gonzalez the pianist Juan Jose Calatayud and drummer Tino Contreras and others. Listening pleasures

What are your favorite records, those you hear in your home?. And among them, what contemporary artists?
At home I hear traditional jazz: Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans. I also like Brazilian music (Ellis Regina, Tom Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Egberto Gismonti, Ivan Lins and Djavan). On the other hand I hear classical music and of course Latin jazz (Paquito D'Rivera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Danilo Perez and others).
Some of my favorite contemporary artists are: Joey Calderazo, Marcus Roberts, Nicholas Payton and Kenny Garrett. Immediate Future

What are your new projects?
Menduvia Osmany Paredes and will be performing at the Festival de Jazz del Orinoco in Venezuela, in August 2002. Today we played the weekend at a club in Mexico City. And I'm working on new material for my next project. Thank
. Thomas Peña

born in the heart of the deepest feelings of my wife and my friends who inspired me to be filled with joy and wisdom of thousands of houses and other Cuban families. It is filled with many great talents energy grouping. Attempts to capture this great party music: the classical period, popular, contemporary folk, jazz and traditional Cuban music. Jazz filled with the most complex fused Cuban rhythms, is one of the most satisfying projects I have done.
During President Bill Clinton, Cuban music, the island, it flowed very naturally from these farms Americans. It was surprise to find a Cuban band on tour in the United States. With the arrival of President Bush, Cuban musicians do not get visa and cultural exchanges have been dramatically reduced. And these places are not seen. If it were not for Cuban musicians have settled here over the last decade, this would be an eternal drought.
the late nineties, Nachito Herrera was the pianist and musical director of Cubanismo, which toured throughout the United States were long and applauded. Then Nachito settled by Minnesota and stayed with us, to our satisfaction. And to hear him in his first production there is no doubt that Nachito saves us from this drought of Cuban music to U.S. authorities before us.
In the eleven tracks is a rich variety of Cuban rhythms from the pace pylon, guaracha, Guaguanco, bolero and Latin jazz. Everything is a torrent of memorable moments without yawning space. Nachito pleased and surprised.
Ignacio "Nacho" Herrera, considered a child prodigy has spent his entire creative life that combines the sounds of his native Cuba with jazz, classical music and a unique mixture of American influences. Here in the TPT studios, Nacho (piano), Kevin Washington (drums) and Yohannes Tona (bass) showed their work with one of the most high-energy performances across the stage. ARTIST BIO

At the tender age of 12 years, Ignacio "Nacho" Herrera exploded in the Cuban music scene and has been breaking barriers since. He studied with masters of Rachmaninoff, Rubén González, Jorge Gomez Labraña, and Frank Fernandez and served as lead pianist, arranger and musical director Cubanismo. Today, a proud resident of Minnesota, Nachito original combinations are enjoyed by listeners around the world.

Victor Cuica (1949 -)
born in Caracas on April 19, 1949. Like many people interested in music, he began studying at the Military Music School of La Victoria, Aragua. At sixteen he finishes his training specializing in the tenor saxophone. His first works done in the army, the battalion band Bolivar, where he remained for two years. In 1968 he joined the Marine Band, whose repertoire included issues of Glenn Miller and other directors of the big bands of the Swing Era. They are the first contacts with some topics related to jazz. Intrigued by this genre, buying his first records: two long-term tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves and Sonny Rollins.
Cuica, not according to what was learned in military schools, while continuing as a member of the bands of the Navy, it forms part of the School of Music Jose Angel Lamas. The coincidence of an exam in the academy and a presentation forces you to choose and is retiring from military life to the rank of corporal II, to integrate into civilian life. In High School he studied flute, theory, theory, harmony, choral singing and bel. This preparation helped him get a job as choral director of the Andres Bello Catholic University and simultaneously appeared in nightclubs. His first quartet was composed by himself in tenor sax, Freddy Bossa on piano, Armando "Caraquita" Caceres on drums and Jose Castro on bass. His varied repertoire included music: salsa, charanga, pachanga and some jazz. These were years in which Cuica still knows how to improvise and will only carry the melody.
A contract takes him to the island of Aruba and remained there for six months. Takes a period to do research on improvisation, but in the field of salsa. Upon his return, in the early seventies, he joined the Caracas nightlife, along with pianist Oscar Maggi, form a group to play at L'Insolite, one of the most popular beer seventies. With Maggi is more concerned with jazz and bossa nova, and gradually develops the ability to improvise.
In 1974 leaves the musical to pursue acting in film and television. In the second half of this decade deepened her vocal studies and conducts courses and workshops in drama. In his spare time playing guitar, and sax I had almost forgotten.
In 1981 returned to the field of music and organized a group called Victor Cuica and Latin jazz, dedicated exclusively to jazz. Its members were Cuica on tenor sax, Hector Hernandez on bass, Junior Romero on piano, Oscar Rojas on drums and Eleazar Yánez on saxophones. This group was invited to a festival in Memphis, USA and then had the privilege of being the first Venezuelan to be invited to the prestigious Montreal International Festival. Hereafter have been more concerned about being a performer with a sound that a composer. His studies have focused not only on el.jazz, but also in the fusion of Latin music with classic jazz and also has been interested in improvising in the Caribbean folkloric rhythms, samba, bossa nova and calypso .
Among his most outstanding actor in the film are the films good girl is asked presence and motorized bike itself (1977), Manoa (1980), How Anita wanted to get up to Marino Camacho Méndez (1986) and Tender Is the Night (1992). He has also written film soundtracks Claus and flooded land long back (1986), The sea of \u200b\u200blost time and Macu, wife of Police (1987).
addition to his temperament as a musician and actor, Cuica has also been a good entertainer. In their presentations are often accompanied by jokes and nineties has been experienced as a bolero singer.
writing about jazz, it is also necessary to do so on their natural habitat: the nightlife. In many of these groups were recruited function performs songs were varied and include standards jazz. Centers were short-lived and, given its lack of definition, a term derived something else or disappear. In others, the exceptions, the bands played only jazz tunes. Were preferred by intellectuals, the snobbery, the true fans, professional musicians, finally, for all those eager to escape the mediocrity of other nightclubs. Of these, given the large support given to the musicians, The Hundred Chairs, the Barcelino and Juan Sebastian Bar are the most memorable.
